" Germany: 2021/today Munich - S/U railway network Coffee Mug

The subway in Munich is the most important means of public transport in Munich, along with the S-Bahn. Since the opening of the first line on 19 October 1971, a network of 103.1 km of tracks and 96 stops has been built, to which the neighboring town of Garching near Munich is also connected. Around 413 million passengers are carried each year. The Munich S-Bahn (city rail) is the most important means of public transport in the Munich area. The S-Bahn network was established at the 1972 Summer Olympics from several existing suburban lines. They were electrified and connected by a tunnel. This so-called main line - initially also known as the V-Bahn for connecting trains - leads from the main station through the inner city of Munich to the Ostbahnhof. On weekdays, it carries over 840,000 passengers, with the main traffic coming from the Munich area to the city of Munich returning to the city of Munich in morning traffic and in the afternoon rush hour. The Munich S-Bahn employs more than 1,500 staff, 600 of whom are train drivers and another 120 are service employees.[6] Munich S-Bahn (city rail) is the third largest in Germany, measured by the length of the line network (after the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn and the central S-Bahn).
